Our Story

Blackroo was founded by Steve Fordham, a proud Kamilaroi man, to create real pathways for those doing it tough. We support people rebuilding their lives after domestic violence, offer second chances to those ready to change, and make sure no one is forgotten at Christmas through our Food & Toy Appeal. We also empower young women through our Netball program — building confidence, leadership, and pride in culture.

We live by RISE — Respect, Inspiration, Support, Empowerment — and every donation helps light the way forward.

What began as one man’s dream is now a powerful grassroots movement — opening doors, lifting spirits, and building a stronger tomorrow for all. Together, every action takes us one step closer to Closing the Gap.

Support Us
  • Community Support

Helping people through life’s toughest moments.
From hygiene and laundry services to food, school supplies, and safe housing—Blackroo supports families, women, children, and individuals experiencing hardship through hands-on, practical care.

  • Second Chances

    Breaking cycles, rebuilding lives
Through programs like Second Chance for Change (SC4C), we support Indigenous men leaving prison with mentorship, skills training, and job opportunities—restoring purpose and dignity.

  • FNAE ROOS

Empowering young women through sport and culture. Our winning FNAE Roos netball team inspires Indigenous girls to lead with pride,

strength, and purpose—on and off the court. It's more than netball; it’s a pathway to confidence, connection, and a brighter future.

  • Culture & Identity

Celebrating who we are, where we come from
Through art, storytelling, language, and design, we connect young people and workplaces to Indigenous culture, keeping traditions strong and pride alive.

  • Enterprise for Impact

    Using business to build community
Every cup of Yawu Brew, vending machine stocked, or artwork rented generates funds that go straight back into community programs—creating jobs, training, and independence.

  • Connection & Community

Bringing people together to rise as one

From Interact Discos to BBQ trailers for local fundraisers and the annual Food & Toy Appeal, we create spaces where everyone feels welcome, valued, and supported.

Our Mission For Change

At Blackroo, this isn’t just a mission — it’s Steve Fordham’s life’s work. A proud Kamilaroi man and NSW Young Achiever of the Year, Steve set out from a young age to create lasting change for his people. His vision is clear: close the gap, create pathways forward, and ensure no one walks alone.

We believe in hand-ups, not handouts. In walking beside people with respect, heart, and hope — as they rebuild, rise, and reclaim their future. From safe housing to meaningful work, from cultural reconnection to second chances, our programs are about real lives and real impact.

Every step we take is driven by the belief that every person matters. Every family deserves dignity. Every community has strength.

This is more than charity — it’s a call to come together. Because Indigenous people can’t close the gap alone. Let’s rise together — one life, one step, one community at a time.

RISE with Blackroo!

Respect, Inspire, Support, Empower

These values are at the heart of everything we do.

Blackroo exists to close the gap and build stronger futures for Indigenous Australians—through culturally grounded support, access to education, economic opportunity, and community-led action.

Every program, partnership, and initiative is driven by a belief in the strength, resilience, and potential of our people.
